What is a Thermomix?

A Thermomix is one machine that does the job of many. It is a food processor, but it also does the following:

  • Cooks
  • Emulsifies
  • Whips
  • Steams
  • Mixes
  • Weighs
  • Stirs
  • Blends
  • Chops
  • Kneads
  • Heats

Why do people buy a Thermomix?

To Save Time and Money

The amount time a Thermomix saves is ridiculous. Preparing food with a Thermomix takes a fraction of the time with traditional kitchen tools. For example:

  • Carrot cake mixture is prepared in 30 seconds
  • Lemon curd is made in 6 minutes
  • Creme Brulée is ready in 15 minutes
  • Holandaise is ready in 4 minutes

This means that there is less prep time, leaving you with more time to go about your day, be more creative or just make something nice quickly.

To Replace old kitchen tools

The Thermomix is very versatile, meaning you can throw out the majority of traditional kitchen tools, such as your food processor, bread maker, coffee grinder, grater, electric whisk, steamer, juicer and slow cooker. This means that you can save cupboard and worktop space too.

How does a Themomix Work?

A Thermomix sits on your kitchen worktop and looks a little like a normal food processor. It has a jug with a blade in the bottom. This blade can do anything from gently stirring a sauce, to reducing ice to snow in seconds.

The base has various controls, that allow you to choose the task you want it to do. These tasks include weighing your ingredients as you put them in, heating to 120 degrees Celsius, and a timer. These three features working together are what makes the Thermomix so good.

The Thermomix also has steaming basket, that sits on top. This allows you to steam veggies while you are making something else below it.

How Much does a Thermomix cost?

Here is the bad news. This kind of versatility doesn’t come cheap. It is $1,850, which is around £1,400. If you were to use a Thermomix in a professional capacity, you would make the money back easily. It is quite a financial commitment for the enthusiastic home cook.

Who Should Buy a Thermomix?

If you are just about to buy lots of kitchen appliances, this may be worth looking in to as an alternative. Home cooks with ageing appliances could easily justify the outlay, if they are looking to replace a few of them. Additionally, if you are just getting in to cooking and haven’t bought all the appliances you need, a Thermomix is a good option.

Using a Thermomix

The Thermomix has a an easy to use touchscreen and is reasonably quiet (depending on what you are doing). It has a sleek design and arms that automatically lock the lid down, so you don’t coat your kitchen in soup. It is also very well made and gives you confidence that you are not going to break it.

But, the really clever thing is the the recipe chip. The chip holds a number of recipes and some have step by step instructions. This is perfect for those that want some hand holding or can’t be bothered to be creative. However, you don’t need to use it.

The Negatives

The Thermomix only comes with  one jug. Therefore, you need to wash it a lot. You can buy extra jugs, but at approx £250 each, you may just want to out your washing up gloves on.

At first you may think that The automatic arms are too slow to open or close the lid. But, you get used to it and it is an essential safety feature.

Have a look at the video below for an example of how to use a Thermomix.

Cook-Key and Cookidoo

The Cook-Key is a wireless device that you attach to the side of your Thermomix. It gives you access to thousands of recipes, but it is also a weekly planner. You can add your favourites to the planner, synchronise it with your Thermomix and it will help you cook each recipe.

It will also create a shopping list for you, to make sure you have everything in.
